The spinal cord is supplied by blood from two major sources: the anterior and posterior spinal arteries longitudinally, and the segmental arteries transversely. Segmental arteries arise as branches of the vertebral, intercostal, lumbar and sacral arteries. A single anterior spinal artery originates from the union of branches of the vertebral arteries at the level of the medulla; it travels the length of the cord in the anterior median fissure. Branches from the anterior spinal artery, reinforced by segmental artery branches, supply the anterior and lateral gray and white matter, the central gray matter and part of the posterior gray matter. Paired posterior spinal arteries also originate from the vertebral arteries; they course postero-laterally, but may terminate at any level of the cord by anastomosing with branches from the anterior spinal arteries. The posterior spinal arteries and their anastomosing branches supply the posterior gray and white matter.  Branches from the anterior and posterior spinal arteries and the segmental arteries form a rich anastomosis \(the extramedullary plexus\) around the cord."))
