(FRAME-INFO (STRING "Hydrocephalus Boy. \(Image compliments of Dr. P. Swanson, Dept. of Neurology, University of Washington\). Hydrocephalus is a condition resulting from an increase in the volume of cerebrospinal fluid within the cranial cavity. Blockages in the ventricular system or imbalances in the production and absorption of cerebrospinal fluid are the usual causes. If hydrocephalus occurs in a child before the skull sutures have fused, it may cause a significant increase in the size of the head. In some cases of hydrocephalus the cortical mantle may be so thin that the head transilluminates when a light is held next to it, as shown here. Some forms of hydrocephalus may be treated by placing a shunt from a site \"upstream\" of the blockage directly into the venous system or peritoneal cavity."))
