(FRAME-INFO (STRING "Objectives. Know the tracts involved in conveying pain and temperature information from the body \(the spinothalamic tract, also known as the anterolateral system\) and face \(trigeminothalamic pathway\) through the brainstem to primary somatosensory cortex in the postcentral gyrus. The somatosensory pathways can be thought of as a chain of three neurons. The first neuron carries information from the receptor into the central nervous system. The second neuron usually has an axon that crosses the midline and ascends to the thalamus, and the third neuron projects from the thalamus to the somatosensory cortex. Learn the pain/temperature pathway: for each of the three neurons in the \"pain\" chain from periphery to cerebral cortex, know the name and location of both the nuclei and the tracts formed by their axons. Be sure you know the route of trigeminal tracts that carry pain and temperature information from the face. Know where the second neuron in the chain crosses the midline. Locate the approximate position of the tracts in cross sections of the brain stem. Appreciate that there are alternate pain pathways such as those relaying through the reticular formation."))
