(FRAME-INFO (STRING "Summary Ghosts. \(Images modified with permission from H.D. Patton et al., Introduction to Basic Neurology. W.B. Saunders Co., 1976\). Use these drawings to review the location of the different motor nuclei in the brainstem, and the nerves associated with each of the functional groups. At the left, the nuclei are ghosted-in onto a schematic of a posterior view of the brainstem. At the right, they are ghosted-in onto sagittal views of the brainstem \(ventral is to the right\). The somatic motor group is also called General Somatic Efferent; there is no Special component so the group can be referred to as simply Somatic Efferent. Actions: eye and tongue movements and, though not shown here, the \(spinal\) accessory nucleus can be included as it is responsible for head and neck movements. The branchial motor group is also called Special Visceral Efferent because the muscles innervated are derived from branchial arches. \(Sometimes the accessory nerve is included in the branchial efferent group\). Actions: facial expression, mastication, swallowing and phonation. The visceral motor group is also called General Visceral Efferent. It supplies preganglionic parasympathetic innervation to autonomic effectors \(smooth muscle, cardiac muscle, and glands\)."))
