(FRAME-INFO (STRING "Somatic Motor Nuclei. Cranial nerve motor nuclei can be categorized by their target muscle type into somatic motor, branchial motor and visceral motor nuclei. The somatic motor nuclei shown here \(also called the Somatic Efferent, or General Somatic Efferent group\) innervate the muscles in the head and neck derived from somites. They form a discontinuous column of nuclei, located in groups at different levels of the brainstem but in a similar position mediolaterally. The nuclei are, from rostral to caudal: the oculomotor nucleus \(III -- eye movement\) and the trochlear nucleus \(IV -- eye movement\) in the midbrain; the abducens nucleus \(VI -- eye movement\) in the pons; the hypoglossal nucleus \(XII -- tongue movement\) in the medulla. It is becoming more common also to include in this functional category the spinal accessory nucleus \(XI -- head and neck movement\) located in the spinal cord, because the muscles innervated \(trapezius and sternocleidomastoid\) are of somite origin. The so-called cranial portion of the accessory nerve actually arises next to the vagal part of nucleus ambiguus in the medulla and travels entirely with the vagus nerve to the larynx, so the argument goes that it does not warrant an independent category, but should simply be included with the vagus, leaving the accessory nerve then as the spinal accessory nerve, in the somatic efferent category."))
