The cervical enlargement is at spinal cord levels C4 or C5 to T1. The cervical spinal cord hemisection on the left is fiber-stained \(Weil\), and the one at the right is cell-stained \(Nissl\). In both of them the groupings of motor neurons that innervate the upper extremity are prominent in the anterior horn.  Note the mediolateral topography indicated. The medialmost clump innervates trunk \(axial\) muscles, and the lateralmost hand and finger muscles. The intermediate group innervates shoulder, arm and forearm muscles. Flexor motor neurons are located more centrally in the gray matter, with the extensor motor neurons located closer to the surface of the gray. There is also a rostrocaudal topography of innervation; shoulder muscles are innervated from the more rostral segments \(C4-C6\), and the intrinsic muscles of the hand from the more caudal segments \(C8-T1\)."))
