(FRAME-INFO (STRING "Rostral Medulla, Computer Reconstruction. This reconstruction highlights some of the components of the glossopharyngeal nerve \(IX\). Rootlets of this nerve pass lateral to the spinothalamic tract to exit the brainstem between the olive and the inferior cerebellar peduncle, rostral to the vagus rootlets. This nerve, though relatively small, contains a number of different components. Its motor components supply \(1\) the innervation \(special visceral,  or branchial, efferent\) to the stylopharyngeus muscle \(a branchial arch derivative\) and \(2\) the parasympathetic innervation \(general visceral efferent\) to the otic ganglion \(whose postganglionic fibers supply the parotid gland\). The motor nucleus for the stylopharyngeus is the nucleus ambiguus \(green\) and for the parasympathetic fibers, the inferior salivatory nucleus \(blue\). Although the focus of this frame in this chapter is on motor nuclei,  you can review the sensory components of the glossopharyngeal nerve that you learned in the Brainstem and Cranial Nerves chapter. The glossopharyngeal nerve carries \(1\) general sensory information from parts of the ear and pharynx; \(2\) sensory information from the carotid body and the carotid sinus \(general visceral afferents\); and \(3\) taste information from the posterior third of the tongue \(special visceral afferents\).  General sensory fibers travel in the spinal trigeminal tract to synapse in the spinal trigeminal nucleus \(yellow\). Taste and general visceral sensory fibers terminate in the solitary nucleus \(red\)."))
