The cortex of the hippocampal formation \(archicortex\) is continuous with a transitional type of cortex \(entorhinal cortex\) over the parahippocampal gyrus. This transitional cortex gives way to neocortex at the  rhinal sulcus \(more posteriorly, the collateral sulcus\).  The layers of the lateral geniculate nucleus show up nicely with this stain.
