The labeled interstitial nuclei represent two nuclei; the interstitial nucleus of Cajal and the rostral interstitial nucleus of the medial longitudinal fasciculus. Both nuclei are involved in vertical gaze and project to the oculomotor nuclei of both sides \(only ipsilateral connections are shown in the drawing\), in part through the medial longitudinal fasciculus. This interstitial nuclear region is sometimes referred to as a vertical gaze center, since a paralysis of vertical gaze can occur in lesions of the midbrain-diencephalic region where they are located. Major projections to these nuclei come from the cortical eye fields \(indirectly via the midbrain reticular formation\), superior colliculus, and superior vestibular nuclei.
