This computer graphic reconstruction of the translucent brainstem illustrates the locations of the three cranial nerve nuclei that control eye movements. All three \(the oculomotor, trochlear and abducens nuclei\) lie close to the midline. The oculomotor nuclei are located in the midbrain at the level of the superior colliculus. The oculomotor nerves \(III\) exit via the interpeduncular fossa; they innervate the superior, inferior, and medial rectus muscles and the inferior oblique muscle, in addition to the levator palpebrae muscle which lifts the eyelid. The trochlear nuclei are just slightly caudal to the oculomotor nuclei at the level of the inferior colliculus. The trochlear nerves \(IV\) are unique in being the only cranial nerves that cross the midline and the only cranial nerves to exit from the brainstem dorsally; they innervate the superior oblique muscles. The abducens nuclei are located in the pontine tegmentum. The abducens nerves \(VI\) exit the brainstem at the junction of the pons and medulla near the midline; they innervate only the lateral rectus muscles. The oculomotor, trochlear and abducens nuclei are interconnected by the medial longitudinal fasciculus. "))
