The corticospinal and corticobulbar tracts are involved in the control of voluntary movement. Corticospinal fibers are involved in the control of spinal cord motor neurons, while corticobulbar fibers control motor neurons in cranial nerve motor nuclei in the brainstem. Corticospinal and corticobulbar fibers arise from the motor cortex. Some fibers of these tracts also arise from somatosensory cortex. The cortical axons leave the cortex, collecting together in the white matter to pass through the posterior limb of the internal capsule. In the midbrain the corticospinal and corticobulbar fibers pass through the central three-fifths of the crus cerebri, a massive bundle of fibers at the base of the midbrain. The crus cerebri \(sometimes called basis pedunculi\) is also referred to as the cerebral peduncle in clinical usage. The other axons in the crus cerebri are corticopontine fibers destined for the pontine nuclei \(pontine gray\) in the base of the pons."))
