The deep cerebellar nuclei \(we can call them simply the cerebellar nuclei since there is no companion superficial group!\) are visible deep in the white matter, separate from the cerebellar cortex. The nuclei receive input from the Purkinje cells of the cerebellar cortex: the vermis projects to the fastigial nuclei, the paravermal zone projects to the intermediate nuclei and the lateral cerebellar hemispheres project to the dentate nuclei. Cells in the fastigial nucleus project through the inferior cerebellar peduncle, primarily to the vestibular nuclei and reticular formation. Cells in the intermediate and dentate nuclei project through the superior cerebellar peduncle. Dentate cells project primarily to the ventral lateral/ventral anterior nuclear complex of the thalamus, while the cells of the intermediate nuclei project both to the red nucleus and to the thalamus.
