The axons of these cells travel in the oculomotor nerve \(III\) to the ciliary ganglion, which controls pupillary constriction and the shape of the lens. Axons of cells in the superior salivatory nucleus travel with the intermediate branch \(nervus intermedius\) of the facial nerve \(VII\) to innervate the lacrimal, submandibular and sublingual ganglia, which control the respective glands. Axons of cells in the inferior salivatory nucleus travel with the glossopharyngeal nerve \(IX\) to the otic ganglion, to control the parotid gland.
