This reconstruction shows the origin and route of the special visceral efferent \(or branchial efferent\) fibers of the facial nerve \(VII\); these innervate the muscles of facial expression, and the stapedius, stylohyoid, and digastric \(posterior belly\) muscles. Fibers originate in the facial motor nucleus, pass dorsomedially to loop around the abducens nucleus \(forming the internal genu of the facial nerve and raising a small bump-the facial colliculus-in the floor of the fourth ventricle\), then travel ventrolaterally through the tegmentum to exit the brainstem between the abducens and vestibulocochlear nerves. The facial nerve then enters the internal auditory meatus and travels along the facial canal to exit the skull via the stylomastoid foramen. The part of the facial motor nucleus that controls the muscles of the forehead receives bilateral cortical input, while the rest of the nucleus receives input only from the contralateral cortex; thus, if the corticobulbar fibers from only one hemisphere are destroyed, the forehead muscles may be unaffected, while the contralateral lower facial muscles will be paralysed.
