(FRAME-INFO (STRING " Globus Pallidus, Computer Graphic. The forebrain has been sectioned coronally through the anterior commissure \(yellow\) but the lentiform nuclei \(or lenticular nuclei, i.e. the putamen and globus pallidus\), amygdala, and claustrum have been left intact and all protrude from the surface of the section towards you. The anterior commissure passes through the ventral part of the globus pallidus. The thin sheet of cells lateral to the putamen \(in blue\) is the claustrum; it has substantial connections with the cortex, but its function is unknown. It is not considered part of the basal ganglia, although it is anatomically quite close to them. Note the hypothalamus medial to the globus pallidus, and the anterior nuclei of the thalami adjacent to the interventricular foramina. The lateral ventricles are shown in black, the third ventricle in blue. The amygdala nuclear complex is shown in red. It is an important component of the limbic system; it sends a projection to the basal ganglia in addition to its projections to the hypothalamus and other components of the limbic system. The globus pallidus is an \"output\" nucleus of the basal ganglia: it receives input from the caudate and putamen, participates in other circuits involving components of the basal ganglia, and projects to the thalamus, specifically to the ventral anterior and ventral lateral nuclei, which project in turn to the motor and premotor cortex. Through this route the basal ganglia exert some control over movement by acting through descending pathways originating in the cerebral cortex. "))
